The construction of these Log Bird Feeders and cabin follows the construction methods of the real log cabin home. Each log has been cut from a white pine board, salvaged from construction site dumpsters, and routed to the “D” shaped log. The logs in the wall are each glued and nailed to the lower level there by locking each level together. The rafters are also cut from a pine board and assembled to simulate timber frame detailed construction. Each pair of rafters are glued and nailed to the walls. The roof shingles are cut from a pine board to simulate real wood roof shingles. All shingles are notched so to overlap each other to create a weather tight roof. Each shingle is glued and nailed to the timber rafters. The barn model has a gambrel roof and hand-crafted copula attached for extra roof details. The log barn and cabin feeders have room to hang a suet feeder on one or both sides. The chord to hang the feeder can be adjusted to balance the feeder if one or two suet feeders are attached to the side wall. Once the wood construction is completed, the Minmax stain is applied to the base, walls, and the roof. If you order a custom feeder or hiuse, you can choose from the nine stains for the color of the walls and the roof: Cherry, Gunstock, Red Oak, Sedona Red, Pecan, Blue, Black, White, or Early American. Two coats of Min-wax Satin Outdoor Urethane are applied to the walls and three coats to the roof to preserve and protect the wood from the elements. A silicone sealer is applied to all roof seams to keep water out of the feeder. The roof design, overlapped shingles, and silicone sealant will keep the bird seed dry. Future coats of urethane and silicone sealer can be applied as needed to extend the lifetime of the feeder. There are three Log Cabin Feeder models available: the Log Cabin with a base of 6” X 12”, the Mini Log Cabin with a base of 6” X 6”, and the Log Barn with a base of 6” X 12”. The Log Bird House has a base of 6”X6”. The Log Cabin and the Log Barn can be constructed with a fixed roof or with a removable roof that can be lifted off for easy cleaning and refilling. Both the barn and the log cabins have a chimney with a cap that can be removed for easy filling with a funnel. The Mini Log Cabin only comes with a fixed roof and chimney with a removable cap. Refilling can also be done easily through a window by using a seed scoop with a sliding trap door in the bottom that leads to a small tube with an attached flexible pipe. The floor of all models can be removed for cleaning by removing the four screws on the first row of logs with a small Phillip’s head screwdriver. Make sure that the holes are resealed with a silicone sealer if the screws are removed for cleaning. All feeders are constructed to be hung but they can also be placed on a pole or pipe. Please contact me for a pole type supported feeder or with any other questions. The location of the feeder is very important. Birds like to land on nearby trees and bushes and at the same time within your area of observation. Once you have attracted a variety of birds make sure you keep the feeder well supplied with a seed mixture and suet packs of your choice. Birds love to have access to a bird bath too. I would also suggest that you hang the feeder in such a way to keep Squirrels from gaining access. Their sharp teeth could do a lot of damage to the logs! Why invest in these Log Bird Crafts? They are locally crafted, durable construction using reclaimed wood, rustic appearance, and provide protection for the birds and bird food from the nasty stormy summer and winter weather. |
